Unit 1 - Sectional Tensions & Civil War

Sectionalism and the Civil War (1820–1865)
Before the Civil War, the United States became increasingly divided over slavery, states’ rights, and economic differences between the North and South. Tensions grew through events like the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Abolitionists worked to end slavery, while Southern leaders defended it as essential to their way of life. The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 led Southern states to secede, forming the Confederacy. The Civil War (1861–1865) followed, becoming the deadliest conflict in U.S. history, as the Union fought to preserve the nation and ultimately end slavery.
